Class 2 Transformers

Class 2 Transformers and SELV Low Voltage Control Transformers.

Class 2 or Class II control transformers represent one of the most common commercial transformer applications, and are found in a broad range of industrial, medical, and consumer applications. Class 2 transformers have unique characteristics to enhance safety. Most notably, low secondary voltage to reduce electrical shock hazard and low power to reduce fire hazard. The specific design requirements for Class 2 and Class 3 transformers are described in Underwriters Laboratories Standard UL 5085-1 and UL 5085-3 (formerly UL 1585) and CSA C22.2 No. 66.1 and C22.2 No. 66.3 (formerly CSA C22.2 No. 66). Class 2 circuits themselves are defined in the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70, Article 725. While there is no direct equivalent to Class 2 circuits abroad, EN 61558-1 (Safety of Power Transformers) and EN 61558-2-6 (Particular Requirements for Safety Isolating Transformers for General Use) have an analogue, Safety Isolating Transformers, which provide power to SELV (safety-extra-low-voltage) circuits.

Our Low Voltage Class 2 Transformer series offer an economical solution with output voltages of 12 V, 24 V, and 24 VCT and capacities of 5 VA, 20 VA, and 50 VA. For more demanding and higher power applications our industry leading SURVIVOR™ and SURVIVOR CT™ series are excellent choices. Our SURVIVOR™ Class 2 transformers are available with output voltages of 24 V or 26.5 V and capacities of 40 VA, 50 VA, 75 VA, and 100 VA. Our SURVIVOR CT™ series add a center tapped output winding to provide 12 V and 24 V connections. All of Foster Transformer Company’s UL and C-UL Recognized Class 2 transformers are classified as Inherently Limited and require no additional external fusing or circuit protection.

Foster Transformer Company also offers a variety of UL Listed and C-UL Certified Class 2 transformers. Listed transformers are commonly used when a transformer will be field installed or not otherwise installed in a location which provides a protective enclosure. For customer’s seeking to export their equipment to the EU, our SELV Safety Isolating Transformers are an ideal solution. Incorporating all of the features of our SURVIVOR™ UL Recognized Class 2 transformers, our SELV Safety Isolating Transformers are Glow-Wire Compliant and certified to EN 61558-1, EN 61558-2-6, and EN 60335-1.
